For Kate Cash photography is a form of connection — a way of stepping beyond observation and into the lives and stories of the people she photographs. A camera can be a form of protection or a doorway; a distance from what she witnesses, or an invitation into another person’s world.
Her work is rooted in the belief that photography is not only about what is seen, but what is felt. Whether capturing fleeting moments on the street or documenting the lives of communities, Kate looks for the quiet gestures, expressions and encounters that reveal something deeper about the people she photographs.
Kate is a London-born, France-based documentary and street photographer. Originally trained in professional media, photography, she began her career in sports photography before spending over eighteen years with the Metropolitan Police. Returning to photography in 2021, Kate draws on a lifetime of observation, curiosity, and an understanding of human behaviour to create images centred around people, communities and the stories they carry.
Her work explores the connections between people, place, and identity across diverse cultures and communities, from fleeting street encounters in France and beyond to longer-term documentary projects in East Africa. She is currently developing a multimedia documentary film and photography project around Lake Turkana, exploring the impact of climate change, displacement, and changing livelihoods.
Through her photography, Kate seeks to create honest representations of people and communities, focusing on connection, dignity, and the stories held within everyday moments.
