Success Stories from Kakuma: Voices of Resilience and Creativity

My journey to Kakuma Refugee Camp began long before the day I finally arrived.
In December 2023, while scrolling through Instagram, I came across the work of a young photographer named Steve Kiza. His images struck me immediately — raw, heartfelt, creative, and deeply inspiring. Only afterwards did I realise he was living in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. His talent was undeniable, and I remember thinking how strongly his work deserved to be seen far beyond the camp’s borders.

What began as casual messages and conversations with Steve — talking about life in Kakuma, his art, and the possibility of me travelling there to document his story — slowly evolved into a plan. And in October 2025, that plan became real.

It marked the start of an extraordinary journey — one that would lead me to meet young people whose creativity and determination rise above the harsh realities they face daily. Many have lived through experiences no one should ever have to witness, yet their dreams remain intact, their voices powerful, and they refuse to let the label refugee define their identity.

These are their stories — stories of success, resilience determination, and young people refusing to let their past define their future.
